Council Members Williams and Dorsey Walker Team with Local Restaurant to Assist 10 Year Old Boy Critically Injured When Hit by a Van

Cash or gift cards are sought to assist the boy and his family with medical expenses

Wilmington City Council members Robert Williams (D-7th District) and Sherry Dorsey Walker (D-6th District) have joined with Silvio Garbati, owner of the Café Verde restaurant in Trolley Square to assist a young Millsboro boy who was injured last Saturday when he was hit by a van allegedly driven by a drunk driver.

Ten-year-old Garrett Rogers is hospitalized at the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children in critical but stable condition and Garrett’s family is traveling back and forth from their downstate home to care for their child. With expenses mounting, the Council Members and Wilmington restaurant owner were contacted by the family of a 10-year old Wilmington girl—Catherine Hassler— because Catherine said Garrett needed help. Catherine’s effort has resulted in a campaign to collect cash or gift cards to assist the boy and his family. This new upstate effort to help Garrett compliments similar actions that are already underway downstate to raise money for the family.

Citizens are asked to drop off either cash or gift cards at Café Verde in the Trolley Square Shopping Center Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. or you can call Silvio Garbati at (302) 656-5411. Council Member Williams said citizens can also call him at (302) 893-6906 for more information or Council Member Dorsey Walker at (302) 377-5199.

Williams heads the City Council’s Health, Aging and Disabilities Committee and Dorsey Walker is a member of the committee. “Garrett and his family are in for a long haul as far as his recovery is concerned and they are still dealing with the tragedy of losing Garrett’s father last November,” said Williams. “Sherry and I are pleased to join with Silvio at Café Verde to do what we can to help the family. This effort is possible because one 10-year old child thought enough to step forward and help another child her age. This says something truly wonderful about us as people and I hope the response to this campaign is strong.”
