Councilwoman Yolanda McCoy is currently serving her third term on the Wilmington City Council, where she continues to advocate for the community she cares deeply about. A dedicated public servant, she has built her career on a foundation of compassion, leadership, and a strong commitment to improving the lives of others.

Married for 25 years, Councilwoman McCoy and her husband have raised their two sons, Elisha and Avery Jr., in the home they have lived in for 20 years. After a decade in the banking industry, she transitioned to human services, where she discovered her true passion. Specializing in community outreach, she has worked as a case manager, strengthening her connection with individuals and families in need.

Councilwoman McCoy has collaborated with numerous nonprofit organizations and has been particularly dedicated to SGS Ministry and the MSK Community Center. She also played an instrumental role in the City of Wilmington’s Park and Open Space Revival. First elected to City Council in 2016, she has served as Vice-Chair of the Community Development and Urban Planning Committee and co-founded the Healthy Communities Subcommittee.

During her tenure on Council, she has chaired the Education, Youth & Family, and Public Safety committees, aligning her work with the most pressing issues facing the community. She is passionate about creating safe and supportive spaces for residents of all ages, believing that every individual deserves a secure and thriving environment.

As she embarks on her third term, Councilwoman McCoy is focused on continuing the work she started, completing key initiatives, and driving meaningful change that will benefit all Wilmington residents.
