Odyssey Charter School celebrates raising $16k for heart health awareness
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WILMINGTON – In recognition of Odyssey Charter School students raising more than $16,800 in an effort to to bring awareness to heart health by raising, the school will be hosting a “Healthy Heart Exercise Extravaganza” later this month.
“This is one of those easy projects to support and get behind – when our youth take the initiative to raise money for a healthy cause.,” said Councilman Turner, who represents Wilmington’s 5th District and has provided active support around the initiative. “They raised over 16k in two months which deserves recognition in itself.”
This year all Odyssey 3rd and 6th graders served as mentors to the school’s children in grades Kindergartners through 2nd grade using the premise of staying healthy part of their focuses.
“Our mentoring groups, known as the OWLS Pals, have been a large focus by delegating the responsibility of positive relationships as students grow throughout their time at the school,” said Zach Plerhoples, who teaches health and physical education at Odyssey Charter School and event organizer.
In celebrating the fundraising accomplishment, the event will highlight two heart healthy activities: healthy relationships and exercising on a regular basis
At the event, all 1,200 K-6-grade students will gather on the Athletic Field and in their designated mentoring groups engage in exercises and other playful activities for approximately 25 minutes.
“We are very proud of our community and that’s why we’re running this event,” Plerhoples said. “Our students and community are motivated to help themselves and others.”
