Third District Wilmington City Council Member Darius Brown arranged for a special class to be taught this morning at Howard High School of Technology on East 12th Street which is located in Brown’s council district. Brown, a member of Council’s Community and Economic Development Committee, approached the National Association of Securities Professionals (NASP) recently and asked the group to present a class about the financial services industry to students in the school’s Academy of Finance. Brown is also on the Community Advisory Board for the Academy.

The Academy offers a three-year program of study for approximately 75 high school students interested in pursuing careers and post-secondary education in the financial services field. The specialized curriculum, developed with industry professionals, is taught in the classroom and practiced in the workplace. Beginning in the 10th grade, Academy students spend half of each school day taking a full range of academic courses, learning economic and business principles as well as practical skills for the workplace such as human relations, business communications, and job readiness.

Howard’s Academy is affiliated with the National Academy Foundation (NAF), a non-profit organization that sustains a national network of career academies to prepare youth for personal and professional success. Students may earn college credit through Tech Prep Agreements and may also test for Principles of Banking certification through the American Institute of Banking.

The National Association of Securities Professionalsis the premier organization that is built upon the cornerstone of inclusion within the financial services industry. They seek to connect members to industry leaders and business opportunities, advocate for policies that create equal representation and inclusion, provide education opportunities, and work to build awareness about the value of ensuring that underrepresented individuals are included in all aspects of the financial services industry.

Council Member Brown said his dual mission in inviting NASP to present at Howard was to share information on a current topic that is important in today’s discussion of the economy, and to introduce students to NASP which pursues equal opportunities for minorities and women in the securities industry and increases public awareness of public and private finance career opportunities.

NASP serves as a resource for the minority community at large and for the minority professionals within the securities and investments industry by providing opportunities to share information about the securities markets, including functioning as a repository for information regarding current trends, facilitating fundamental education seminars and creating networking opportunities.
