Statement by Wilmington City Council on Veto of House Bill 85
Wilmington, DE (July 20, 2017) Wilmington City Council issued the following statement in response to Governor Carney’s veto of House Substitute 1 for House Bill 85:
“On behalf of Wilmington City Council, I applaud Governor Carney’s decision to veto House Substitute 1 for House Bill 85 – a bill that gave all children in the Christina School District an opportunity to apply for admission to Newark Charter School, except children residing in the City of Wilmington. Council believes that this legislation was discriminatory on its surface and would not have stood a constitutional test.
It is our fervent hope that Governor Carney will exercise his leadership to further discussions about the Wilmington Education Improvement Commission’s (WEIC) plan that would reduce the number of school districts in the City of Wilmington and provide a weighted funding formula for the high-poverty segregated schools that the state has created.
Council would also like to thank State Senator Margaret-Rose Henry and State Representatives Stephanie T. Bolden and Charles Potter for their efforts to defeat this legislation and their leadership in the General Assembly on behalf of Wilmington.”
