Wilmington City Council to Sponsor a Day of Peace and Remembrance on Saturday (August 20) in Rodney Square
The community will come together to remember victims of violence and promote peace and understanding throughout the City
Wilmington City Council President Theo Gregory, on behalf of all members of Council, today announced a Day of Peace and Remembrance event to be held this Saturday, August 20, in Rodney Square beginning at 1 p.m. to remember victims of violence and to support peace and understanding among people throughout the City.
“This event came about largely because members of the community felt we needed to come together as a citywide community and reflect on those touched by violence and urge each other to adopt peace in our hearts,” said President Gregory. “The day has been designed by the community to bring people to the square from all faiths and backgrounds to share music, listen to words of inspiration and celebrate the work that is already underway in Wilmington to help people heal and prosper.”
Groups participating in the Saturday afternoon event include the Stop the Violence Prayer Chain Foundation and Reeds Refuge Center, as well as numerous churches and musicians. The event will also feature the release of white doves as symbols of peace which are being donated by the Congo Funeral Home and the House of Wright Mortuary. Saturday’s gathering will conclude with a group singing of the song, “We Are The World,” by Michael Jackson. The Day of Peace and Remembrance is a FREE event for the public.
